Flexible calibration keeps PostNord PEX courier vans running

PostNord PEX Courier transports large quantities of temperature-sensitive goods for pharmaceutical manufacturers, hospitals, and the foodservice industry, among others. To meet strict legal requirements, temperatures during all transports must be measured and saved. Thanks to a flexible calibration setup for Testo loggers, PEX’s courier vans can perform time-critical deliveries – around the clock, every day of the year.

PEX Courier is part of PostNord’s Logistics business area and offers local, national, and international courier services. Many assignments are urgent and time-critical. These can involve pharmaceuticals and patient samples, but also foodstuffs and important spare parts for industry.
– Our customers demand that we can respond at any time to carry out carefully controlled, sensitive deliveries. Sometimes we have less than half an hour to pick up and deliver, says Cecilia Östensson, Regional Manager for PostNord PEX Courier West and South.

Temperature measurement in all vehicles

An increasing number of transports require temperature monitoring of the cargo compartments. Therefore, PostNord PEX uses approximately 45 data loggers of the Testo 175 T1 model. The loggers measure and record current measurement data every five minutes during transports. Additionally, during both loading and arrival, the driver checks the temperature in the cargo compartment and notes the values on specific forms.
All measurement data from the transports as well as calibration certificates for all loggers are stored by PEX at the regional office in Gothenburg. The same system also contains current calibration certificates for all Testo loggers. The background for this includes the requirements of GDP (Good Distribution Practice), which aims to ensure that medicines maintain their quality, safety, and efficacy throughout the entire logistics chain.
– We have broadened our customer base within health, healthcare, and food. Therefore, we currently have temperature loggers in all our vehicles, so that all of them can be used for temperature-sensitive transports, says Cecilia Östensson.

Calibration without downtime

PostNord PEX Courier has collaborated with Nordtec for about ten years. In addition to Nordtec supplying PostNord with temperature loggers from Testo, they assist PEX Courier with annual calibration of all loggers. Submitting loggers for calibration could pose a practical problem for an operation where vehicles need to be available at all times. The solution is a flexible arrangement where PostNord and Nordtec maintain close dialogue and plan calibrations together.
Tomas Månsson de Coursey, Traffic Manager at PostNord PEX Courier West, explains the calibration routines:
– When it’s time for calibration, we decide weekly which five to eight drivers are able to go to Nordtec’s calibration lab. Before the loggers are submitted, we empty them of measurement data, which is saved locally. After that, each driver can go to Nordtec, submit their logger for calibration, and receive a loan logger.
– This way, we can continue driving just as usual. Our vehicles remain temperature-logged and available for assignments, which is very important because we receive calls constantly, Tomas Månsson de Coursey continues.

Flexibility When Needs Change

For PEX, it is also important that calibration can be adapted to an operation where planning can change quickly. A transport assignment might suddenly appear and clash with a driver’s scheduled trip to the calibration lab.
– If a driver has booked a calibration but suddenly receives an urgent assignment that same morning, it’s never a problem to come by the calibration lab later in the day. Nordtec always solves it, says Tomas Månsson de Coursey and adds:
– We receive the same quick assistance if a logger, for example, shows an error message. In that case, the driver can contact Nordtec directly for help in resolving the problem.

Loggers a crucial prerequisite

For PostNord PEX, it is of utmost importance to be able to present documented temperature values. A customer can at any time request temperature data from a completed transport. And then it is very important for PostNord PEX to quickly and easily show both measurement data and calibration certificates to the customer.
– Temperature loggers are a fundamental prerequisite for us to be able to work with the customers we have today. Temperature is directly critical in many transports, and therefore the collaboration with Nordtec is incredibly important, states Cecilia Östensson.
