Temperature control for sustainable asphalt

temperature measurement during asphalting

The right temperature during asphalt paving is crucial for a durable, durable and dense asphalt pavement. Therefore, accurate temperature measurement is an important part of a successful paving process. With a robust temperature gauge and a durable plug-in sensor, you get full control over both core and surface temperature, making it easy to ensure the best possible results for every paving project.

Why temperature control is crucial

Temperature has a major impact on the compactibility, durability and bonding of asphalt to the subgrade. If the asphalt is too cold, the mass becomes stiff and difficult to compact, which can result in a porous pavement with a high void content and an increased risk of cracking and faster degradation by traffic, water and frost. If the asphalt is too hot, the binder can be adversely affected by increased oxidation, which deteriorates the properties of the mass. It can also lead to the binder penetrating the surface – so-called bleeding – which makes the surface slippery and less durable.

For best results, paving should be carried out at ground and air temperatures above 5°C, preferably between 10-25°C, which provides optimum workability and ensures that the pavement adheres properly to the substrate.

Ensure quality and sustainability

Using a temperature meter or IR thermometer together with a plug-in sensor provides a flexible and reliable solution for temperature measurement in the asphalt core. The robust testo 925 temperature meter provides accurate measurements directly in the asphalt mass and is designed to withstand harsh environments. In addition, it has practical features such as an illuminated display, min/max display and a hold function that allows you to freeze measurements. You can also set limit values to receive audible alarms when these are exceeded. Thanks to the connection to the testo Smart app, you can also easily document and share measurement values directly on your mobile.

The testo 830-T2 IR thermometer enables fast and non-contact measurement of surface temperatures. Connect a plug-in sensor to get a complete instrument for both core and surface temperature. Adjustable emission factor allows you to customize the measurement for different materials, while the 2-point laser sight ensures you measure on the right surface. Features such as min/max display, hold function and alarm when limit values are exceeded are also available.

For a convenient and complete solution, we offer ready-made sets for temperature measurement in asphalt, based on testo 925 and testo 830-T2 respectively, together with a durable insertion probe and practical storage case. These kits make it easy to work efficiently, ensure the right temperature and deliver a durable and aesthetically pleasing asphalt pavement.
